Mixing It Up

2/5/2008 4:26:25 AM
A first-time visitor might be surprised to find such an eclectic range of cocktails available here in Phnom Penh.

Here we'll take a look at a selection of the more unusual creations on offer.

The Espresso Martini (Café Metro)

What do you need to clear up that groggy hangover? Coffee of course, but why wait till the morning when a perfect nightcap is this little mix. Take some quality freshly brewed coffee, shake it up with vodka, and… well that’s all they’ll tell you as the other ingredients are a closely guarded trade secret, but who needs to know when they mix it perfectly every time!!

The Law Suit (Pontoon)

Created by Pontoon's original owner this one’s still as popular as ever. A heady mix of kiwi fruit muddled with lime and sugar, and then shaken with tequila and Midori, creates a cocktail that’s just too easy to drink, but it packs a hidden punch hence the name. One too many and you might just have a law suit on your hands, at least if you're not in Cambodia!

The Absinthe Margarita (Talkin to a Stranger)

Another one that could get you in trouble (as Absinthe remains illegal in many countries), is this electrifying concoction. As if margaritas don’t pack enough of a punch on there own, try adding a hefty dash of Absinthe to the mix. The taste is a little sharp, due to the strong anisette flavour, but the wonderful kick you get after a couple of these will have you partying till dawn.

Coconut Concoctions (Scandinavia Hotel)

A simple idea this, but a whole lot of fun. Take a coconut, drill a hole in the top and pour in a blend of spirits. What do you get? Quite possibly the biggest cocktail in town, and it’s no pussy either. One of these lasted me through at least an hour of a torrential rain, and with the wide selection they have you could spend a whole day trying each, then most likely a whole night trying to stand up!
