A diet of burgers and beer maybe convenient but it will play havoc with your body, so where can you rebuild your six-pack?

Keep Fit Or Bust
If you believe your body is a temple of excellence, then it could probably do with a daily workout to fight the flab and refresh your heart and lungs

So why are you reading this article? Bored at the bar and you want to know where you can work out? Maybe, like me, you’re an expat who has finally realised that beer mugs and dancing at the Heart of Darkness will not keep you in shape?
So what’s on offer and where are the fitness sweatshops? Since we’re all different I asked Sam Moffett, the manager of the Clark Hatch, about what people should look for in a gym. For the Phnom Penh resident, he suggested convenience (such as location and parking) and comfort (with or without air conditioning). For the short-term visitor he reckoned that one of the hotel gyms was probably the best option.
From a price perspective, day rates are generally in the $10-$15 range with standard monthly rates ranging from $80-$100. Most offer discounts for longer-term membership and/or restricting your hours. I am an off-peak guy. Despite the high initial sticker shock, you can get some reasonable deals if you work through the discount plans.
So what do you get for your cash? To be frank, most of these are basic hotel gyms – some cardio machines and varying assortments of free weights and machines in air-conditioned rooms of various sizes. Most have pools, spa facilities and staff to advise and assist. Membership may include access to these as well as discounts on hotel services. Some stand outs: the long row of treadmills facing the pool at the Phnom Penh Health Club; the new equipment and staff at Physique Club; the lap pool at Fitness One; the helpful staff and extensive mix of machines and free weights at Clark Hatch Fitness Center; and, the pool, locker and spa facilities at Amrita Spa.
One of the newest and best-equipped gyms is the Place, that markets itself as more of an upscale private club than a gym, which is reflected in its high price. A year’s membership costs at $1,500, although there seems always to be some form of discount – there is no posted monthly rate, but perhaps one can be negotiated. For the price you get two floors of air-conditioned workout space with great views of the city. The Place has an extensive array of cross-trainers, treadmills and other cardio equipment as well as weight training machines and free weights. There is also a fitness studio in which a variety of free and paid-for classes (yoga, Khmer dance, capoeira etc) are held.
Of course, there are many options that are lighter on your wallet. Of those in the mid-price range, Paddy’s Sport Center, VIP Sport Club (both of which have websites) and Parkway Health Club. VIP also has a wide range of facilities priced well below most hotel gyms, but if you want access to all the facilities the price rises accordingly. A day pass is $3-$5. VIP is off Norodom on the way to the Monivong Bridge. Paddy’s loses points for its locker room and lack of aircon, but is probably the best-equipped gym in the city. Its day rate, though, has been raised to a whopping $3 (in other words, it’s still great value). To find Paddy’s, keep going past the Japanese Bridge on Sisowath.
Parkway has a fairly well-worn gym with all the basic equipment and wins big points for its large indoor pool. As part compensation there is an unaffiliated bowling alley and rooftop golf driving range to occupy you until the pool frees up.
Finally there are the low-cost options. A couple to note: Rama Fitness Center just off the corner of St 63 and St 178 is well equipped and at 2,000R a day costs less for a month than many hotel gym daily rates, and King Kong, an open-air gym next to the Olympic Stadium that is an even better deal at 700R, but with less equipment.

A volunteer-cum-new director of Operation Smile Cambodia describes the emotions he feels at the end of each mission
Miles of Smiles
They travel from all over Cambodia in the hope that
first world medical miracles can change a life and bring
a smile to children’s faces

It all started when Jim Heston at California 2, a long-time supporter of Operation Smile, suggested my friend Ian and I witnessed one of its surgical missions. Being a warm and boring Phnom Penh day I thought, why not?
I was stunned. First the location, the Khmer-Soviet Friendship hospital; it’s not exactly a five-star Bangkok health centre. Second, the kids.. I have read that cleft lips and palates occur in 1/500-1/750 births worldwide. I had seen photos and read about the condition, but this was different. When one of these kids smiles, you see past the cleft lip or palate and into to their hearts. It is hard not to be moved.
Third, the families. In some cases they made long and arduous journeys from all over Cambodia. Leaving everything they had ever known to go to the big city, families were sleeping in hallways, up to 15 of them sleeping in a small room. Hammocks were slung between beds and halls as parents watched over their children in the hope they would be given a chance at a better life. Even at this brief glimpse Ian and I could see the impressive logistical, organisation and support behind Operation Smile: international and Cambodian medical, support staff and volunteers all working together to help these children.
Operation Smile was founded by Dr William and Kathleen Magee in 1982 with a mission of medical volunteers to the Philippines. Since that time, more than 115,000 children have been treated and Operation Smile now supports medical missions in more than 26 countries. Its first mission in Cambodia took place in 2002 in Phnom Penh and a year later Operation Smile Cambodia was formed. To date, about 1,000 children have received corrective surgery in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Battambang.
Last March the mission was held in Phnom Penh, where more than 200 patients were screened and approximately 130 treated over five days. This was only possible with the assistance of 49 international medical volunteers from nine countries, 29 Cambodian medical volunteers, international and local support volunteers, OSC staff, directors and donors, support from Operation Smile worldwide and the Cambodian families who trusted OSC with their children. I want to single out Dr Theavy from the many who worked diligently to make such missions successful.
OSC is beautiful in its simplicity and focus. It brings together local and international resources to provide a straightforward procedure that changes a child’s life. From a medical perspective, people with cleft lips and palates often have difficulty eating, talking, hearing and breathing. From a social perspective, repairing a cleft can lead to greater acceptance and confidence.
Looking forward, OSC is considering more surgical missions outside Phnom Penh. While considerable assistance is received from the international Operation Smile organisation, OSC raises funds from local and foreign businesses and individuals in Cambodia – you may have seen donation boxes in Lucky supermarkets – and focuses on the specific needs of children with cleft lips and palates and the unique challenge they present.
If you want to learn more about Operation Smile, its website is www.operationsmile.org. If you see a donation box, think about putting something in; OSC deserves your attention and, most of all, your financial support.

It seems like there's a new spa opening every week in Phnom Penh.
Winding Down
Well perhaps not quite that frequently, but the past twelve months has seen huge growth in the industry.

Just a few years ago, if you wanted anything more than a simple head or neck massage you would have to visit the spa at one of the city's finer hotels, and pay a suitably luxurious price for the pleasure. And while some of the riverside places offered reasonable value if you just needed someone to knead your weary muscles for a while, there was always the risk of finding yourself in the potentially embarrassing situation of being asked whether you wanted a "happy ending", even more awkward if you weren't familiar with the terminology.
The ongoing restoration of the city, coupled with an influx of more affluent residents and visitors, has brought an appetite for improving standards across the board. Witness the number of upscale restaurants opening in the last year or so, many of which would as likely succeed in Bangkok or Singapore as here in Phnom Penh. Ditto the range of boutique hotels that have emerged over the same period, the refurbished Scandinavia and newly-opened Villa Langka being good examples of this new breed.
So it's perhaps not surprising that the range of spa services available here in Phnom Penh has also grown dramatically, with prices starting at just $6 an hour for a basic massage up to $50 an hour and beyond for a more sophisticated experience. The list of available treatments seems as extensive here in Phnom Penh as anywhere, popular options ranging from aromatherapy and hot stone massages to esoteric therapies from many different countries including India, Sweden, Egypt, China and Indonesia.
Two popular treatments here are the traditional Thai massage, and its cousin the traditional Khmer massage. Thai massage (known as Nuad Bo’ran in Thai) has its roots in the Ayurvedic system originating from India, and was introduced by missionary monks over two thousand years ago, initially to help soothe the muscles of workers from the rice fields. The masseur uses his or her thumbs, palms, forearms, elbows, knees and feet to work along energy meridians called Sen lines, thereby increasing the flow of energy and helping the body to detoxify, balance and heal. The treatment is one of the four cornerstones of Thai medicine, the others being herbal remedies, nutritional medicines and spiritual practices, and is still taught today at Wat Pho in Bangkok.
Similarly, Khmer massage forms one of the five pillars of traditional Khmer medicine, the others consisting of: medication, treatment by magic, therapeutic burning and rubefaction. The latter two treatments are often referred to as “cupping” and “coining”, involving the use of coins and/or a flame under a glass to stimulate blood flow, draw toxins out from the skin and promote good health. They are traditionally used to help balance “khyol” or “wind illness” – coining is known as “khos khyol” or “rubbing the wind” whereas cupping is known as “choob khyol” or “sucking the wind.” A third variant, “chab khyol” involves using the first and second fingers to pull upward hard on the skin. These three treatments leave red welts and bruises on the skin, however, and while you often see such patterns on local people, the techniques have perhaps unsurprisingly found little popularity with Westerners. Khmer massages offered at spas around Phnom Penh rarely use these treatments, preferring an approach more akin to the Thai practice.
Whatever your requirements, you’ll find that Phnom Penh will have something to suit you. Many businesses also offer massage services at your hotel or guesthouse so if you really want to relax you don't even have to leave the comfort of your room.

Keeping fit and healthy in Phnom Penh has never been easier - there are plentiful gyms and health clubs, and an ever-increasing number of spas and beauty salons. There are also various regular informal sporting events (touch rugby, football, softball etc) - see our website for more details and check out the listings on the back page of the Friday edition of the Cambodia Daily
