Pub Street and the lanes leading off it have grown up over the years and now offer a wide choice of food, fun, drink and music
What's In A Name?
In an ever-expanding city such as Siem Reap, the places where it’s good to linger longer are just becoming more and more inviting

There are times when a name is applied and it sticks even when it doesn’t really apply anymore. Siem Reap’s Pub Street is such a place. Not to say that it isn’t the bastion of late-night fun, it’s just that it has grown to encompass the alleyways north and south as well as the neighbouring streets and has as many facets as the people that come to visit Cambodia.
Originally there were only a couple of watering holes just north of the Old Market to keep company with Zanzybar on Sivatha Street, which mainly catered to backpackers of all nations and persuasions. Le Tigre de Papier doubled as a secondhand bookshop/café while Angkor What? specialised in loud music, stiff drinks and customer graffiti. The Banana Leaf and Red Piano nearby also served food and drinks and are still good places to watch the world go by. The club on the block was the Temple, with pool tables and a dance floor.
As more tourists came to town, so the number of venues popped up around the pioneers and the name Pub Street was the easy way to tell your driver you were out to party. Soon every door was blasting out ever-louder music in an attempt to entice people to drink for less and party more. The past few years, though, have been more productive as some of the tiny, great eateries expanded into restaurants, new clubs opened that were not just loud but also interesting and an art scene blossomed.
If you’re on a pub crawl you can continue further down the street to the Funky Munky and then down to Molly Malone’s, which is the most like a “pub-lic house” of any in town. Across Sivatha is the X Rooftop Bar, a late-night venue with a view and across the street there’s the infamous, swinging Sok San Palace. If your trip coincides with your favourite footy club’s schedule there is the aptly named Sports Bar across Sivatha from Sok San and tucked in the alley. It’s open all night and screens many European sporting events live.
The alleyway south of Pub Street has been completely remade over the past few years and been named The Passage. It includes eateries such as Amok and Khmer Kitchen as well as the vegetarian Chamkar and the decidedly non-vegetarian Burgers Without Borders. More art galleries have nestled in along with some clothing and souvenir shops to make this a delightful place to spend your afternoon or evening. Late night in The Passage offers the Linga Bar, a gay friendly spot with a sophisticated air.
Perpendicular to Pub Street is a road that combines shopping, eateries and massage spas; a perfect spot to find yourself after a long day of hiking in the sun. Most of the massage spas are open until late and there’s nothing better for sore feet than a skilled foot massage. It also helps to revive you in preparation for more fun. One block from Pub Street near the Old Market is The Warehouse, which opened a few years back as a late-night gathering place. If you’re looking for a night of ass-shaking you’ll find the Laundry Bar just a few metres away where DJs crank out a party every night.
The newest nook to get a facelift is the alley north of Pub Street called simply The Alley. It’s a quieter area, a good place to kick back with tales and cocktails. There’s the Shanghai inspired Miss Wong cocktail bar, the Giddy Gecko Bar, which is a great place to lounge, and The White House with its clean and subtle charm.
So when your driver drops you off at Pub Street, keep in mind that it’s an entire and entertainingly colourful area, with lots on tap.

Refreshing, fragrant, tasteful are all words used to describe the almost unique experience of the wonderful world of tea
Tea And Empathy
More a way of life than a hot drink, not since the Boston tea party has the leaf-based drink been more popular where taste is the king

When I was growing up in rural England, tea at 4pm was a time honoured by floral-patterned and dainty china cups and saucers and one of those collapsible, five and six-tier wooden cake stands laden with neatly cut (crusts removed sandwiches), scones with strawberry jam and double cream, a Battenberg marzipan cake and Rich Tea biscuits.
Although the food was subject to change according to what invited guests most enjoyed – an aunt from Salisbury loved her “tiffin” accompanied by macaroons topped with half an almond – the tea leaf of choice was always Earl Grey, its taste and distinctive smoky fragrance living on in my olfactory memory to this day. Which is why as a self-confessed tea-aholic, am happy to recognise that Cambodia is among the top nations where tea drinkers are, literally, spoiled for choice.
That may well be down to the polyglot nature of society here with all manner of Asian nations rubbing shoulders with almost as many nationalities as there are flags on Sisowath Quay in Phnom Penh. For the tea drinker it’s a magical mystery tour with a mostly eastern flavour.
Top of the Anglo-Saxon list of traditional tastes have to be the largely familiar brands of Lipton and Tetley in bag form. Tastewise there’s not a lot of difference when they are mixed with milk, but try them as “black” tea and Lipton is a nose ahead for aroma and flavour. Not that it’s a competition, because both do the job of waking up your senses and tantalising your taste buds for the long day ahead. It’s a far better pick-me-up than caffeine-laden black coffee and a lot healthier than a bloody mary.
Moving on, though, and you can experience the Orient in all its fragrant and subtle glory. Tamchau (jasmine $1.80 and green $1.80), Alishan Kao Shan ($15), Bontea peach ($6.15), Huajing ginseng ($2), Kai Cham ($15), Menda ($10.70) and Ranuag (sunflower and garcine green, $3.65) from China, Taiwan and Japan are all worthy of the tea ceremonies that celebrate their consumption around the world.
This exotic assortment shares shelf space with mainstream blends such as Dilman’s Ceylon tea flavoured with mango $3.25, cherry $2.90, green $3 or in pure form $1.20. Alternatively you could follow the Bontea line with its Pure Ceylon, $4.15, “grown in the champagne area of the mountain ranges in Sri Lanka where the air is crisp and refreshing. Bontea promises a sensual and pleasing experience to the tea connoisseur”. Lipton has also taken up the challenge of providing hot drinks other than straightforward tea with green ($3.25) and herbal (caffeine-free, $3.25). And following on from the instant coffee culture beloved of people in a hurry, or just too lazy to brew up a pot on the stove, Bontea now markets an instant peach tea drink ($6.15).
The ceremonial aspect of serving and drinking tea in the East is in itself a relaxant as anyone who has eaten in Chinese restaurants will know, where the palate is freshened up and ready to deal with assorted food flavours. In the West there is the more arcane milk before tea tradition (or is it the other way around?) beloved of vicars and old maids, which is but one aspect of the afternoon delight as the sun works its way round to the yardarm. Here in Cambodia you also fulfil another time-honoured tradition by exercising your teeth and taste buds by topping off your teatime with traditional (though not British) Marie biscuits at $1.65 and delicious Walkers shortbread at $3.75.
