That may not be jet lag you’re suffering from, you could have picked up someone else’s medical problem and need . . .
Scott Of Cambodia
Working as a doctor in Phnom Penh means you have to be prepared for just about anything in the way of exotic diseases and misdiagnosis

Suffering from an infectious disorder? Never fear, Dr Gavin Scott is here to tend to your every up-close and personal need. With degrees from several prestigious UK universities you can be sure that none of his prescribed remedies include chicken blood or a spectrum of coloured pills.
Scott arrived in Cambodia in the early 1990s as a United Nations volunteer charged with setting up the Civilian Medical Clinic. During his year of service he noticed that the country lacked any western standardised medical service. As a result he and an Australian nurse opened a clinic in 1993 and has been here ever since.
With his smooth, Leslie Phillips-like English accent, 52-year-old Scott sums up the medical services of Cambodia in one word, “corrupt”, something the government here acknowledges as a problem. He recalls an incident involving an English teacher who told him he had visited a woman claiming to be a doctor. Asked why, he said that if he could teach English with fake certificates then why couldn’t she practice medicine with falsified qualifications.
The number of stories about bogus or corrupt doctors, western and Khmer, are endless. Scott recalls two such recent life-threatening situations in which a man arrived with a “spot” on his nose. He had attended another clinic in Siem Reap where he was told it was herpes. Certainly, his wife was not amused to think that her husband had been poking his nose in places it didn’t belong. Scott, though, asked questions of the man and discovered that his family had a history of skin cancer.
Another patient had been told by a Cambodian doctor that he had facial acne. The condition did not improve so he consulted Scott, who immediately detected the distinct possibility of HIV, which after several tests was later confirmed. Had the man not sought a second opinion from another doctor, it is likely he would have died in less than a year.
While Scott is predominantly a general practitioner, he admits to being fascinated by infectious diseases, from tropical to sexual, vaginal discharges to parasites. However, most of his patients come to him with skin-related issues brought on by tropical conditions. “I like the wide range of diseases, something you won’t get in Manchester,” he says.
Vaccinations are another service he offers, a regimen that he feels most travellers do not take seriously enough. Rabies and influenza vaccinations are the two, he says, that get neglected the most. “My general policy is you should be vaccinated against everything,” says Scott. To prove his point he explains that during a long flight when the air is recycled every few minutes, viruses can spread rapidly. Rabies is also a priority because of the number of dog and monkey bites cases he treats
“It’s very difficult to recommend good clinics in Cambodia, often one is forced to say if you really want the best you have to go to Bangkok,” says Scott when asked about the service offered by other other clinics. It is important to note that many of the clinics in Cambodia, he says, have agreements with various hotels. Therefore, even though you may be staying in a luxury hotel, it does not necessarily reflect the type of medical service you will get, although the high price you will be charged for private treatment is a given.
