Peace and package tours have made Cambodia a must-see destination for society’s less-mobile travellers who need. . .
A Helping Hand
Have wheelchair will travel is a reality for tourist
destinations around the world, so what is Cambodia doing to welcome them?

In a continent where a disability is often viewed as having “bad karma”, getting around proves to be equally difficult and in Cambodia the problem is amplified as the transport options are severely limited. However, many of Siem Reap’s resorts and hotels have considered the lack of local amenities and had disabled facilities carefully designed into their construction. This is particularly true of the five-star resorts, which are eager to be recognised by international standards. They have successfully embraced the idea of opening their doors to every market and all venues mentioned provide guest wheelchairs and WiFi. The Angkor Palace Resort & Spa (on the airport road) is the largest of its kind in Siem Reap and there is access to all areas except the garden bungalows.
Aware they would be catering for the senior end of the Japanese business market, all-around access was one of the criteria when the resort was being built. Since then, they have experienced a large demand for its exemplary disabled facilities, from the conference boardrooms to the bedrooms. Seven of its residential rooms have been specifically created with disabled occupancy in mind.
Around the resort there are plenty of ramps, smooth bridges and level surfaces. If there isn’t a slope each set of steps in the resort has a specific custom-made portable ramp to be produced on request Most importantly, they also helpfully provide the manpower to assist guests visiting the temples of Angkor. After a comfortable ride in their mini-van, two assistants are on hand to guide and lift tourists around the heritage site for $30 a day.
The impressive Hotel De La Paix doesn’t disappoint for sheer spectacle. One has the feeling that you are walking through an art installation piece or a contemporary gallery not a residential building. Ground floor shops, restaurant and conference and hotel rooms are all accessible as everything is level, except at the bar area where there’s a step down into the seating area. Ramps can be requested and members of staff are always on hand to offer any helpful assistance or physical lifting. There are three specifically designed guest rooms that have bathroom wall brackets, wide doorways, no inner-room steps and are a cut above internationally imposed standards. The hotel offers a variety of premium beauty and health treatments by qualified therapists and any mud-wrap, massage, exfoliant, mask or manicure can be arranged as a personal room visit.
Sofitel Phokeethra Royal Angkor Golf and Spa Resort provides a beautiful environment of elegance on wheelchair-friendly surfaces. The luxuriant pool-view rooms available for chair-bound guests are spacious, have a private terrace, twin double beds and comfortable shower seats plus wall fixtures in the bathroom. With a 24-hour emergency telephone, help is never far away.
The Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor has one room equipped with disabled facilities, a ramp to enter the building, no steep slopes, portable ramps that slot into existing steps and on-hand assistance from its staff.
Other venues that provide ramps and level wheelchair access to public areas and rooms are Baca Villa (26 Phum Taphul Khum Svay Dangkum), Tara Angkor Hotel (Vithei Charles de Gaulle), Shinta Mani (corner of Oum Khun and St 14), Steung Siem Reap Hotel (near the Old Market), Pavillion Indochine (Wat Thmey) and The Royal Angkor Resort.

Siem Reap has an enormous range of hotel accommodation options, from a simple $5 guesthouse to a $2000 suite, and virtually everything in between. We can't list every hotel but here is a selection that covers most price ranges so you should find something to suit your requirements.
