Mountain and quad biking is about getting away from it all and discovering the people and villages of the countryside
The Wheel Deal
Fed up with the noise and smell of tour buses, cars and tuk-tuks in town? Never fear, the solution is here for you to get away from the congestion by renting a slice of freedom

Hiring a car or motorcycle is an expensive and can be a risky affair, but mountain biking is a healthy alternative, as is quad biking for those with good piloting skills. Getting the handlebars and your destination destiny in your own hands is your passport to a different pespective of Cambodia and allows you to glimpse and maybe experience Khmer culture in the remote villages you will pedal your bicycle or manoeuvre your quad bike through. From one-day discovery trips to multi-day adventures, almost anything is possible.
Terre Cambodge (012 982 062), one of Siem Reap’s adventure specialists, offers tailor-made rides to satisfy your appetite for adventure. Packages vary from three days exploring Angkor Wat to 14 days of cycling around the country and are designed around your interests and ability. While riding at your own pace on quiet, scenic roads and in the company of an experienced guide, you can stop when and where you want for a chat with the locals or a picnic. All tours include helmets, equipment (spare tyres, pumps etc), a local guide and a support vehicle for luggage, food and drinks. Multi-day rides include overnight stays in villages or pagodas.
Laurent Holdener, director of Terre Cambodge, explains that his customers span the demographic divide. “Some people request three-day ‘easy riding’ tours to discover Angkor Wat while others want to spend their whole holiday on bicycles. We offer baby seats for families with small children.” Getting more popular in Cambodia is the phenomenon of “Charity Cycling”, where a sponsor contacts Terre Cambodge to design a 10-day tour for groups of 15-60 people who cycle for charity.
Although mountain biking is for everybody, the hot and humid Cambodian climate is definitely not, so if you can’t imagine yourself pedalling around the countryside, a quad adventure might be your pick. Specially designed for off-road travel, Quad Adventures Cambodia (092 787 216) offers different tours for beginners and more experienced drivers. After clear instructions and practice, provision of a helmet and raincoat (if necessary) you head off into the countryside to explore remote villages and the surrounding countryside. Herve Nicole, the company’s founder, says his quads are not dirt bikes and in Cambodia cannot be rented for racing.
“They are solid, easy to drive bikes without gears, but our main concern is always safety, which is why it is important to do the practice first and adapt the tour to the level of the drivers. We drive at a reasonable speed and with two or more quads we always have two or more guides. There’s no official minimum age, but the question is actually not age, it’s experience. A 12-year-old who grew up on an Australian farm where his family owns a quad can have more experience than an 18-year-old from Paris, France, who has just passed the exam for his driver’s licence.” Quad driving is not only for fun but also for a good cause. With the help of travellers who join the tours, Quad Adventure Cambodia supports a school and orphanage in Chres village.
Mountain and quad biking have one thing in common: they are a perfect getaway and offer a unique way of exploring the country. Of course the mud, rain, sand, dust and road bumps are all part of the adventure.
